There a number of design choices you can make to create a tasteful, practical bedroom that offers you (and your partner) a good night's sleep.


Faced with any major design challenge most us ask: where do I start? While the bedroom is no exception, the following questions may help you focus on your real needs:

  • Why do you want to make a change and what are the essentials?
  • What is your favourite spot in the bedroom and why?
  • What do you want to get rid of or change?
  • Is there enough space for everyone to be comfortable?
  • If you need more storage space, how much and what for?
  • Do you need to cater to anyone's special needs?
  • Are there other things you need to accommodate such as a TV, exercise equipment, and so on?


The room

How can you change the room? Is there an empty corner or an unused area? Is there space in an adjoining room from which you can take some extra space?

  • Can you move around the room with ease? What are the obstacles?
  • Do you need to change the room's relationship with the outside? New windows
  • or a skylight may be a solution. 
  • Do you have adequate places to display your art and other decorative items?
  • How about the traffic flow between rooms?
  • How easy is it to make your bed? Do you have storage for spare sheets and blankets?
  • Is the bedroom dark enough? Is it quiet enough?
  • Is the room lighting adequate for your needs? Are light switches conveniently located?


The room's condition

  • What's the current condition of your room?
  • Are the heating and cooling systems adequate?
  • Are the fittings in good working order?
  • Is the room easy to clean? If not, what changes are required? 

Working through these questions will give you some clues on what you need to do. But no matter what the design, the most important thing about the bedroom is that it provides you with a place for a good night's sleep, night after night.
