Mark Your Belongings
Indelible marks on your valuable possessions can be effective if a thief tries to sell them to the second-hand dealer. Take the time to do it.

Taking precautions

Sometimes, all your efforts won't stop a determined burglar. It's wise to take some further precautions that will help with prevention or, at worst, help get your property back should someone successfully break into your home.

Marking your property may seem like a modest measure but it has proven to be effective, particularly when a thief attempts to sell your possessions to a second-hand dealer.

What to mark

Make sure that you mark all items that might be attractive to a thief. Small items such as watches and photographic equipment can be neatly engraved by a jeweller without detracting from them.

Alternatively, mark items with permanent ink - showing your postcode and the number of your house or flat or the first two letters of your name. Only use an ultraviolet marker pen when other methods would reduce the value of the object, because the mark can fade.

Where to mark

Mark belongings in a prominent place where the marking will be both readily visible and difficult to cover or remove. Stereo components, television sets, radios and other electronic equipment can be prominently marked on the back of the chassis or case.

Keep an inventory

Make a record of your belongings including descriptions, serial numbers and other important details that will help identify what is yours. Take pictures of all valuable items like jewellery and silverware. Make sure to keep all of this information in a safe place preferably away from the home in case of fire.
