We’ve bought a lot of paint during our renovations in the last few months.
Any tips on how to store it?
There are some general guidelines you should find useful:
• When storing paint in its can make sure you wipe down the rim before putting the lid back on.
• Before re-sealing the can, cover the opening with plastic-wrap then put the lid securely into place and tap it down. This helps ensure an airtight seal.
• To avoid the skin that forms on the top of paint, tightly seal the can and store it upside-down.
• Avoid storing paint in extreme heat or extreme cold.
• For disposal of water-based paint, pour the leftover paint into a paper bag containing sawdust, sand or cat-litter. Then you can dispose of the absorbed paint with other trash.
• When disposing of oil-based paints, don’t just throw it all in the wheelie-bin. Check with your local council. Irresponsible disposal of oil-based paint can lead to toxic environmental pollution and public-health hazards.
Another tip: If you’ve not finished with it, why not pour a small amount of each type you're saving into sealable jars so when you go back later to do touch-ups you won't have to go to the trouble of opening and re-sealing a big container.
