What ever happened to the plastic bag issue?

The number of plastic bags that end up in landfill is still enormous – latest
estimations indicate over are dumped 400,000 every hour.

Plastic bags have a real and lasting effect on the environment. Campaigns
to reduce their impact must be continued in order to curb the amount
of plastic bags ending up in landfill.

It is estimated that 429,000 recyclable plastic supermarket bags are
dumped in landfill every hour.

These bags can take up to 1000 years to breakdown.

The plastic bag problem needs to be brought back to the forefront of
agenda.

In 2005, Australians used 3.92 billion plastic bags which equated to more
than 10 million plastic bags a day.

While it is also of crucial importance, the debate surrounding Global warming
has defocused Australia’s determination to reduce the impact of plastic bags.

To make a difference, we need to focus on more than one issue at a time.
The state of the environment is complex and requires multiple strategies for
us to become more sustainable.

All home owners need to act responsibly to reduce plastic bags in landfill.

If you have reusable bags, remember to take them with you. If you drive,
simply leave them in your car.

We understand that plastic bags are convenient and sometimes they are the
best device for carrying certain produce or materials, so if you receive a
plastic bag, make sure you re-use it or take it to a collection bin for recycling.
Collection bins are often conveniently located at local supermarkets.

HomeSource joins Clean Up Australia in reinforcing the messages ‘reuse’,
‘refuse’ and ‘recycle’.
