Deck Decorating
Make your deck come alive with these decorating hints. Change it into your outdoor living room, a beautiful and functional space.

Tips and ideas

AS the days get longer and the evenings warmer, you might care to look at some ways of livening up your outdoor spaces, including your deck. To many people, the deck soon becomes a major social focus.

If you think your deck needs a major makeover this year, why not consider selecting furniture, accessories and lighting with exactly the same care you give to your interior rooms. The selection of durable outdoor furniture has never been better. Many companies now offer custom frame finishes and fabric selection.

  • Try grouping seating arrangements according to function (reading, dining,
socialising and so on).Don't be afraid of using dramatic or bold colours. Also
keep mind that some furniture requires special care such as wicker, which should never be exposed to rain or direct sun.

Deck Decorating

  • If you've taken care with your indoor lighting you will know how it becomes the key to setting a mood. It's the same on the deck, with an added dimension of natural colours, forms, textures and outlines.Start with soft, outdoor lamps and  lots of candles where sheltered. The play of light and shadow can bring enormous pleasure and atmosphere.
  • Use lush plants to create a sense of intimacy. For instance, try flanking your
steps with palms planted in big urns so that the foliage rustles at deck level
(subtle sound is another joy of the deck). They are a beautiful way to create a  natural and low maintenance privacy screen.

While a wide range of people will be enjoying your deck, with a little imagination you should be able to create a welcoming space for most tastes and activities.
